Greta Gerwig is the director of the 2023 American fantasy comedy Barbie[a], which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach.[8] It is the first live-action Barbie movie after a number of computer-animated movies and specials based on the Mattel Barbie fashion dolls. Following an existential crisis, the movie follows Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) on a quest for self-discovery. America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Helen Mirren, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell are also part of the supporting cast.
In September 2009, Universal Pictures revealed plans to make a live-action Barbie movie, with Laurence Mark serving as producer. When Sony Pictures purchased the film rights in April 2014, production got under way. The rights were given to Warner Bros. Pictures in October 2018 after numerous writer and director changes, the casting of Amy Schumer and later Anne Hathaway as Barbie, and other events. After Gal Gadot declined the part owing to schedule issues, Robbie was cast in 2019, and Gerwig and Baumbach were revealed as the film’s director and co-writers in 2020. Early in 2022, the cast’s remaining members were revealed. From March to July 2022, the Venice Beach Skatepark in Los Angeles and Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden in England were the main locations for filming.
At the Shrine, Barbie made her debut.
Stereotypical Barbie (“Barbie”) and fellow dolls reside in Barbieland; a matriarchal society with different variations of Barbies, Kens, and a group of discontinued models, who are treated like outcasts due to their unconventional traits. While the Kens spend their days playing at the beach, considering it as their profession, the Barbies hold prestigious jobs such as doctors, lawyers, and politicians. Beach Ken (“Ken”) is only happy when he is with Barbie and seeks a closer relationship, but Barbie rebuffs him in favor of other activities and female friendships.
